The original intention of inhaled steroids, otherwise known as corticosteroids is for the long-term prevention of asthma attacks. While corticosteroids will not stop an attack when it happens (you will need your rescue inhaler for that) using this synthetic cortisol over a period of time will reduce the possibility of asthma attacks.

Corticosteroids are synthetic cortisol hormones which are generated naturally in the body by the adrenal glands (located directly above the kidneys). Cortisol hormones help to give the body added energy. This is why inhaled steroids are now in demand by bodybuilders as a viable alternative to anabolic steroids. Corticosteroids are not anabolic steroids, but as mentioned above, they replicate the functions of natural cortisol hormones in the body and one of these functions is enhanced energy levels.

Types of Inhaled Steroids, their Use and Benefits

There are quite a few inhaled steroids available today. Bodybuilders wishing to use corticosteroids can check out our list of inhaled steroids in the table below;

S/N INHALED STEROID BRAND NAME ACTIVE INGREDIENT NAME
1. Asmanex mometasone
2. Alvesco ciclesonide
3. Flovent fluticasone
4. Pulmicort budesonide
5. Qvar beclomethasone HFA

Corticosteroids help to reduce mucus build up around your airways while also relaxing the muscles and reducing inflammation as well as mucus buildup in your lungs. The result of this is easy, unrestricted breathing which is great for high intensity exercises that put a lot of pressure on your lungs and breathing canal.

As mentioned earlier, corticosteroids provide the body with high levels of cortisol hormones which help to enhance the energy levels of users. When bodybuilders use inhaled steroids, their natural cortisol production is suppressed and replaced by the corticosteroids. The huge boost in energy levels helps bodybuilders to engage in high intensity workouts with the strength, stamina and endurance needed.

Side Effects of Inhaled Steroids

When any of the corticosteroids provided in the list of inhaled steroids table above is used regularly, the drug may cause the user to experience mild side effects. The most common inhaled steroids side effects include;

  • Cough,
  • Hoarseness,
  • Oral thrush,
  • Sore throat, and
  • Pneumonia (a side effect associated with long-term use of corticosteroids).

There are also reports from studies that using high dosages of inhaled steroids can cause weight gain in users, as the drug is capable of increasing the appetite of users. This is intriguing especially if you are looking for a non-anabolic steroid that can help you to gain weight when running a bulking program. However, if you decide to go this route, make sure you also have a good dietary plan in place to ensure that you only consume healthy, nourishing food.
